Organic Tea Tree Oil

Organic Tea Tree Oil

Organic Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Tea Tree oil is prized for its skin care benefits

It is used as a gentle antiseptic, anti fungal and anti viral agent.
It is also good for insect bites and as an insect repellents.
There is a history of use in dentistry and for oral hygiene as a mouthwash.
It has been shown to be effective against dandruff and athletes foot.

Tea Tree Oil has even been used in air conditioning systems and sheep dip!

The best known brand is labelled the “Original Tea Tree Oil”, but
nowhere is it described as organic. Typical shop prices are
around £5 for 10 ml of “regular” or £8 for 9 ml of organic oil.
The pure essential oil we offer is advertised elsewhere on the Internet at £8.02 plus postage for 10 ml.

We know you’ll like our prices, we also believe you’ll be delighted with the quality of this aromatherapy quality tee tree oil.

You should use Tea Tree Oil within a year of opening the bottle, although current sealed stock is coded until 2012.

Cultivation of Tea Tree Oil in Zimbabwe

You will usually be told or read that Tea Tree Oil is only cultivated in Australia.  That is no longer true. In fact China now accounts for 10% of world tee tree oil production. Several countries have attempted to develop plantations with varying success, and the Zimbabwe plantation is amongst the best.

The expertise and plants used to develop the Zimbabwe plantation came from Australia.

The seeds for the plants originate from a small Australian plantation producing high quality organic Tee Tree Oil.  Great care was taken in selecting and developing the soil conditions and providing adequate irrigation. The result has been a successful plantation that is producing a steadily increasing volume of top quality organic Tea Tree Oil.

We would not dare to claim that it is superior to the very best organic Australian oils, yet, but it is a  high quality organic oil at a lower price than most conventional Tee Tree Oils.

The quality of the raw oil varies with soil and climate, but the distillation process and subsequent storage methods also affect the quality of the end product. There are over 100 constituent fractions to Tea Tree Oil, and some of these are only extracted in the final 10% of the full distillation process, and requires as much energy as the other 90%. In energy conservative Australia the distillation process is often shortened, and the proportion of these fractions may be greatly reduced or missing entirely

All these factors affect the balance of oils, and this has to be very carefully controlled in the end product.  Poor quality Tea Tree Oil may irritate the skin rather than soothe and heal it, but quality control prevents that from reaching the market from the main producers.

How to Use Tea Tree Oil

Caution : Most people can safely apply even neat Tea Tree Oil to the skin, however around 1% of people may have an allergic reaction to full strength Tea Tree Oil, and a few may even have a reaction when the oil is diluted. This rate of allergic response is found in many generally safe products - more people react to adhesive plasters.  If you have not used Tea Tree Oil before, you are advised to apply a very small amount to an inconspicuous are to check for any reaction before using the oil more widely.

Acne, Boils etc.

For a facial sauna, use as for inhalant below (but you don’t have to breathe!)

If you have proved that you can tolerate full strength oil you could use it in an emergency situation such as a boil, however it is only advisable to use the full strength oil on an occasional basis.  If you dilute it in a carrier oil, such as almond oil, you will find 5-10% is still effective. For a non greasy version you could add a few drops to aloe vera gel or a lotion you normally use.  See below.

Animals

The equine use of Tea Tree Oil is extensive, and it seems perfectly safe for larger animals such as horses, sheep and cattle. However, extreme care must be taken with smaller animals, even though use is often recommended for parasites and many other uses. Cats in particular seem particularly sensitive and can exhibit a toxic response that can even be fatal. As far as I can tell, this problem has only been associated with applications of full strength oil, but the need for caution is established.

Anti-fungal Uses

Tea Tree Oil is effective for ringworm, athletes foot, thrush (candida).

Antiseptic Moisturizing Skin Gel

Used for years in our household for general body care and just about everything.

Mix about 5 drops of Tea Tree Oil with about 50ml of pure Aloe Vera Gel and add the contents of a Vitamin E capsule. Mix well, preferably by shaking. Use as required.

Note: we use a very good pure aloe vera unavailable in the shops (Not FLP!), which needs the vit E to prevent the aloe’s natural tightening effect. If you use what you buy in the high street it has additives that may have the same effect, but we find the vitamin E is also beneficial.

Anti-viral Uses

Viruses cause most epidemic illnesses. Tea Tree is effective against many common infectious diseases such as measles, chicken pox, flu, cold and shingles,  cold sores, verrucas and warts.

Athletes Foot (Tinea Pedis)

Add a few drops to a footbath and soak the feet. Dry the feet well and rub in with diluted oil.

Bites& Stings

Dab with full strength oil.

Children

Please note, tea tree essential oil can be dangerous if swallowed. As little as 5 ml can be toxic to a small child, so it’s important to keep it out of reach of children. External use, however, is acceptable. Normally, you should dilute any essential oil before applying it to the child’s skin. Never use to treat very young children, internally or externally.

Cold Sores (herpes simplex)

"In a randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study of tea tree oil in the treatment of herpes cold sores, tea tree oil was found to have similar degree of activity as 5% acyclovir" (Source: Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, May 2001, page 450).

Dandruff, Scalp Health

Add a few drops of oil to your favourite shampoo and conditioner. It can also be added to styling gels.

Gargle, Mouthwash

2-3 drops in a cup of warm water makes an effective mouthwash or gargle.
The general advice would be that you may swish but not swallow.

(Alternate with 3% hydrogen peroxide and you’ll barely need a toothbrush!)

Hand Wash (Anti-bacterial)

Add a few drops of oil to a dispenser of liquid soap and shake to mix.

Headaches & Migraine

Massaging Tea Tree Oil into the temples or forehead gives many people partial or total relief.

Head Lice

Add to shampoo, condition, hair gel (or use the aloe vera mixture above) the smell deters the bugs!
Mix 1 part oil to 10 parts water and spray head before going out.

Inhalant

To relieve congestion and fight sinus infection or sore throat, add 2 drops of tea tree oil in a basin of just boiled water. Cover head and inhale for 5-10 minutes.

Insect Repellent

Mix 1 part oil to 10 parts water and spray over exposed areas before going out.

Massage

Add 3-5 drops of Tea Tree oil to 30ml of base oil and massage twice a day for rheumatic pain.

A weekly massage with 3-5 drops of oil per 30ml of base oil helps strengthen the immune system.

Shower and Bath

Add about 25 drops to a bottle of your favourite shower gel, or bath additive.
Or simply add add approximately 3-5 drops to the bath water when running your bath.

Spray (Germicidal)

Add about 25 drops to a spay bottle of water. Shake well before use. Spray the toilet bowl, sinks, surfaces.

Thrush & Candida albicans

Use the mix as under Gargle as a douche, a tampon saturated with diluted oil may also be used.

May also be applied diluted as suggested for acne, as the aloe moisturizer, or as pessaries.

Toothache & Gum Infections

If you cannot get to a dentist and you have a toothache, apply 100% Pure Tea Tree Oil directly to the area using a cotton swab. The tea tree oil will penetrate the gum or tooth to kill the bacteria causing the pain. Gingivitis can also be treated by applying the oil directly to the gums twice a day. Also use a Tea Tree oil gargle.

Toothbrush Cleaner

Your toothbrush is probably teeming with germs and can be a source of infection!

Stand it head down in the glass with a few drops of oil in some water now and then. (Alternatively douse your toothbrush with hydrogen peroxide, if you use that)

Toothpaste

Add a drop to your toothbrush before brushing.

Washing Wounds

Add a few drops to the water used to bathe and cleanse grazes and cuts.  You can also apply diluted oil to the wounded area once dried, particularly useful if you wish to leave the area uncovered.

Yeast, fungal conditions

Tee Tree Oil has be used for Candida and other yeast and fungal conditions. One of the modes of application already stated will be appropriate depending upon the site to be treated.

In fact Tea Tree Oil is an all round product that deserves a place in every home’s first aid cabinet.
