Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica

Spirulina Pacifica ~ a new strain of Spirulina platensis

 

A new strain of spirulina evolved from the original strain in these ponds (Arthrospira platensis).  It is perfectly adapted for the ocean water added to them. It grows faster, and is bigger and naturally higher in carotenoids.

 

Spirulina Pacifica® is a select strain of Spirulina platensis developed over many years of continuous cultivation in Hawaii. Strain development and perfection started in 1984.
Our cultures in Hawaii represent the oldest continuously cultivated and harvested Spirulina in the world. Hawaii's year-round growing conditions and our integrated culture management system have made this possible. Spirulina Pacifica has been extensively analyzed by molecular biologists at the University of Hawaii who identified unique enzymes not previously found in other strains of Spirulina platensis.

How Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica is Produced

 

Hawaiian Spirulina is grown in the pristine environment of the Kona Coast, Hawaii where the ambient climate and pure waters lead to year-round cultivation of our nutrient-rich micro algae.

 

Spirulina Pacifica is a specially bred strain of the edible microalgae Spirulina platensis.

 

It is cultured in shallow, open ponds (approximately 20 cm deep) adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. A combination of fresh water and supplemental deep ocean water is used to fill the ponds. The other major components required for growing Spirulina Pacifica are food-grade baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and carbon dioxide. Food grade fertilizers are used and the deep sea water is added as a rich source of minerals and trace elements. Paddle wheels agitate the water, ensuring even exposure of the algae to the sun for optimal growth and nutritional value.

 

The state-of-the-art Hawaii facility is the largest, most efficiently producing farm in the world. Hawaiian Spirulina is pure, grade AAA Spirulina, free of heavy metal contaminates, binders, fillers or other dilutants and is certified pesticide-free.

 

Hawaiian Spirulina is the only cultured micro algae grown with ultra pure deep ocean water as a source of over 90 minerals and trace elements. The deep ocean water is pumped up from a depth of 2000 feet, supplying magnesium, calcium, and every trace element. This unique resource is also used in the drying system

 

Hawaiian Spirulina thrives in shallow ponds adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. Gentle stirring by paddle wheels assures perfect exposure to the intense Hawaiian sun. The growing medium employs a mixture of fresh water and mineral-rich deep ocean water in a base of food-grade baking soda. This managed growing system assures a contamination-free, consistently superior nutritional profile.

Hawaiian Spirulina is meticulously washed over stainless steel screens. Using a pollution-free, 100% recycled process, we return all the pond water to the growing ponds for the next growing cycle.

 

Prior to drying, Hawaiian Spirulina is rinsed three more time. Numerous fresh water rinses give Hawaiian Spirulina a mild, salt-free taste.

 

Ocean Chill Drying was developed especially to eliminate the oxidation of carotenes and fatty acids that occurs in standard dryers. The process employs a closed system which is kept at less than one percent oxygen by flushing with nitrogen and carbon dioxide. This is a patented process, unique to Hawaiian Spirulina, which relies on very cold deep ocean water to provide dehumidification.

 

The dried powder is immediately protected from oxidation. Using a process we pioneered, oxygen absorbers are enclosed in heat-sealed, metal-lined drums. This method of packaging assures that our customers receive Spirulina that is essentially as fresh as the day it was harvested.

 

Tableting Spirulina provides challenges because of the fine, dusty particle size. Commercial processors often solve this problem using a heat process called granulation which can degrade nutrients.

 

We built an advanced tableting facility specifically for Hawaiian Spirulina, enabling us to make tablets with a cold compression technique.

 

Each batch of Hawaiian Spirulina undergoes a battery of microbiology tests. We operate a food microbiology laboratory at our production facility to assure we meet the most stringent good manufacturing practices.
