What is Spirulina?

 

Spirulina is a single cell blue green algae that can grow up to half a millimetre in length. It thrives in warm, brackish saline ponds. Spirulina grows so fast that it accounts for up to half of the oxygen on our planet!
This simple, one-celled plant is one of the main bases of the food chain, and of life on our planet. Spirulina is a traditional food for some Mexican and African peoples. Spirulina  is highly alkalising and so helps to restore the alkaline pH balance of the body’s tissues.

 

There are many strains of Spirulina.

We sell spirulina pacifica, (Arthrospira platensis) which is a superior strain of spirulina platensis from Hawaii.

 

Spirulina contains so much good, balanced nutrition that it is a highly energizing food.
It is 65% protein, with carbohydrates, vitamins, amino acids, and other nutrients vital to life. The protein is balanced, containing all the essential amino acids and most of those considered non-essential.

 

Spirulina and Chlorella each have unique factors, and together make a very powerful combination. Spirulina contains more protein than Chlorella, but has less chlorophyll and, unlike Chlorella, has a soft digestible cell wall. Whereas Chlorella contains CGF, Spirulina is the only known source of phycocyanine.

 

There has been considerable research on Spirulina. Some studies indicate that spirulina may be able to improve immune function, decrease serum cholesterol levels, improve liver function, and increase beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, when eaten regularly. Phycocyanin. Doctors Sklar and Schwartz of Harvard School of Dental Medicine showed an extract of spirulina's antioxidants prevented cancer in animals. according to A. Patterson, C.N.C., there has been more positive research on Spirulina algae than any other food source known to exhibit anticancer properties. Spirulina Contains

 

Spirulina contains over 100 vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes and phytonutrients. Essential unsaturated fatty acids, including gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), it has many important minerals including potassium, calcium, zinc, magnesium, selenium, iron, and phosphorus, vitamins including B-12 and others of the B-complex, E, and beta carotene, digestive enzymes, chlorophyll, and pigments that help liver function.

 

Ounce for ounce, Spirulina provides more complete protein than meat. This 65% easily digested protein can in itself give a boost, especially given the prevalence of high-carbohydrate diets.
