Payment Problems & Solutions

The customers who have fewest problems are those who have registered with PayPal and linked a credit/debit card to their account and completed the verification procedure. Provided:

1. They at least remember their registered email address and the answers to their security questions.

2. They periodically log into the PayPal site, click on “Profile” and check that all information, such as credit/debit card information, is up to date.

For those who have mislaid information and have more than one card they can use, when you get to the PayPal page simply proceed as if you do not have a PayPal account, and don’t register the one you are using at the end of the transaction.

If you try to do this with a card you have registered with PayPal their system recognises it and redirects you to log into your PayPal account. You must use a card you have not linked to your PayPal account.

Most other problems are Browser related.
Tip: If you use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer you will have far fewer problems, not just with PayPal but with spyware and all that junk! Get it here.

“Blank Page” Syndrome

You decide what you want to buy, click the buy button and .... You’re staring at a blank, or almost blank, screen. A variation on this is that you cannot complete the final checkout stage. It isn’t a problem with our site, and much as we’ve blamed PayPal in the past, it isn’t their site either. It is usually an out of date browser that cannot cope with 128 bit encryption, or a “cookie” problem.

If you use “Windows Update” Internet Explorer security should be up to date and you should only need to clear your cookies. (Internet Explorer: “Tools” then “Internet Options” then click “Delete Cookies”)

We’ve printed below PayPal’s advice on updating both Internet Explorer and Netscape.
(Firefox automatically downloads updates and prompts you to restart the browser for them to take effect)

PayPal uses the Secure Sockets Layer protocol (SSL) with an encryption key length of 128-bits (the highest level commercially available). If your browser does not currently contain 128-bit encryption level, you will need to upgrade in order to be able to access the PayPal website and conduct transactions.

Follow these steps to upgrade your encryption level when using Internet Explorer:

1. Open your Internet Explorer browser and select 'Help' from the toolbar

2. Select 'About Internet Explorer'

3. On the 'About Internet Explorer' window, you will be given a version number and a cipher strength (encryption rate).

4. If your cipher strength is less than 128-bit, you may update your browser by going to your 'Tools' tab and select 'Windows Update'

5. This will direct you to the Microsoft Support site to upgrade your browser.

For Netscape Communicator or Navigator:

1. Click 'Help' and then 'About Communicator or Navigator'

2. In the window that opens, look for a section on RSA security

3. If this section reads, 'This version supports U.S. security' then your browser supports 128-bit encryption

4. Otherwise, it will indicate you have an export version, which only supports 40-bit. (Further details are also available by clicking on Security in the Navigator toolbar)

5. If you need to upgrade your Netscape browser, go to

http://home.netscape.com and click the 'Download' graphic at the top of the page

Please note: If the cipher strength is already set to 128 bit, you will need to clear your cookies.

(Internet Explorer: “Tools” then “Internet Options” then click “Delete Cookies” and confirm)

Verification Problems

PayPal set limits to the amounts you can spend or receive until you have gone through their verification procedures. This is nothing complicated, you just authorise them to debit two small amounts to your card or bank account, and then enter those amounts from your statement on the verification page.

This (theoretically) confirms your address and that you are the person who receives the statements for that account. It isn’t “Big Brother”, simply protection from fraud for both sellers and buyers, who will see that your account is verified and that the delivery address is confirmed; increasing trust.

If you hit the current limits without verifying your account you may not be able to make further transactions until you do so, so it is worth doing this early on.

Shopping Cart “Continue Shopping” Button and Tabbed Browsers

In browsers that do not use tabs the continue shopping button on the shopping basket page will switch you back to the A-Z shop page for your currency zone.

In tabbed browsers such as Firefox and IE7 the button works differently to give you a faster shopping experience. The shopping basket opens in a new tab. When you click the “Continue Shopping” button it changes the page displayed in the other tab to the A-Z shop page for your currency zone, but does cannot move you to that tab.

For Example

If you were on the Chlorella order page, clicking a buy button opens the shopping basket in a new tab and takes you to this tab.

Clicking the “Continue Shopping” button changes the Chlorella order page in the other tab to the A-Z order page, but cannot make that the live tab ~ you need to move back to that tab to continue shopping.

You could, of course, ignore the “Continue Shopping” button and click back to the Chlorella order page and navigate from there.

The Advantage

This is an advantage if you are buying several items as for subsequent purchases you do not have to visit the shopping basket again until you have finished shopping.

You can navigate around the site for information, make multiple purchases if you wish, and then return to the shopping basket tab when you wish to move on to the checkout. The shopping cart tab will have been progressively updated as you shopped and will show all your purchases.
