Chlorella can Replace a Closet Full of Expensive Supplements
April 28, 2009 by Barbara Minton, Natural Health Editor
http://www.naturalnews.com/026147_chlorella_cancer_blood.html
This article, published on the internet in Natural News recognises that if people were going to take one supplement only, for very many people that supplememt would be Chlorella: “{because of} its high nutrient content and potent defence against disease and the ravages of aging, many people have put chlorella at the top of their list”. Amongst other benefits, the article explores new evidence from South Korea about the potential role for Chlorella in causing beneficial programmed cell death of cancer cells and, in particular, evidence surrounding Chlorella Vulgaris. It also looks at the “treasure chest of life enhancing properties” that this nutrient dense algae contains.

http://www.naturalnews.com/025114_immune_system_bacteria_health.html
I am sure in this current climate, as we approach a potential Swine Flu epidemic this autumn; we are all looking for ways to boost our immune system. This is an interesting article that explores ten ways to enhance your natural defences, from measures many people will be aware of, such as aiming to eat organic produce and reducing contact with potentially toxic household chemicals, to other more original solutions. Of particular interest is that detoxifying your body with Chlorella is included in this top ten — showing how these humble ancient algae can be so vital to achieving health in a modern society.
When Foods Become Super
Can our daily diet cure everything from cancer to hay fever?
April 10, 2006, from The Times newspaper, by Lucy Mayhew
A detailed article looking at the rise of superfoods in our modern diet: “Superfoods give modern health consumers everything we need — a hit of essential nutrients in an edible form”. The article lists Chlorella, Spirilina, Wheat Grass and Barley Grass as part of the core group of superfoods. It singles out Chlorella's use in bowel-related disorders. “Dr Robert Gallacher, of the Morrison Hospital in Swansea, has researched natural ways to treat digestive problems such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and diverticulitis. He notes that chlorella, one of the richest sources of chlorophyll, B12 and zinc, helps to balance the pH of the stomach and to repair the gut lining”.

UC Davis Study shows Spirulina boosts immune system
December 1, 2000, by Carole Gan
http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/news/spirulina_study.html
”Adding spirulina to cultured immune system cells significantly increases the production of infection fighting cytokines, say immunologists at UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. Their finding is published in the Fall issue of the Journal of Medicinal Foods”.
Immunologists collected blood samples from 12 healthy volunteers and were able to demonstrate that Spirulina caused a cell-mediated immune response, which would be beneficial in protecting against intracellular pathogens and parasites. They concluded that they are now beginning to understand how natural substances like Spirulina can have benefits to human health.

HIV-1 Protease Inhibitor Induced Oxidative Stress In Pancreatic B-Cells: Thymoquinone Protection
March 27, 2009 by Dr. Krishna C. Agrawal, Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine
This article highlights the benefits of black seed oil found in a recent study looking at people with HIV who are taking protease inhibitors (PIs), such as nelfinavir, as part of their antiretroviral regime. Protease inhibitiors are potent antiretroviral agents clinically used in the management of HIV infection and are known to cause insulin resistance, which can lead to Type 2 Diabetes.
“Investigators successfully tested the hypothesis that nelfinavir induced oxidative stress was responsible for the deleterious effects of the HIV-1 protease inhibitor on insulin production by pancreatic beta-cells and they further investigated the therapeutic strategies to ameliorate the insulin dysregulation at this level. Since the hypoglycemic effects of Nigella sativa oil have been investigated in the past, the investigators postulated that nelfinavir induced oxidative stress may be ameliorated by the administration of the active ingredient of this oil, thymoquinone”.
The study concluded that Nigella sativa oil (black seed oil) may have a role as a protective agent against insulin resistance caused by protease inhibitors.
Energise Alkaline Diet & Natural Health Blog (health news, alkaline diet resources & tips to make you happy!)
April 27 2009, Ross, Director of Energise for Life,
http://www.energiseforlife.com/wordpress/2009/04/27/alkaline-diet-proof-evidence/
The director of Energise for Life, Ross, interprets an article in the Journal of Nutrition, published in January 2008, entitled: The Balance of Bone Health: Tipping the Scales in Favor of Potassium-Rich, Bicarbonate-Rich Food. This paper showed that there was unquestionable benefit to bone health in preventing osteoporosis and long term fracture risk if patients consumed a diet rich in vegetable and fruits that are high in potassium and bicarbonate. The study also agreed that the Western diet is naturally quite acidic.
Ross goes on to say that in addition to making our diets rich in bicarbonate we would get extra benefit from alkalizing our water and adding in alkaline dietary substances.
Systematic review of the nutritional supplements dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) in the treatment of osteoarthritis
Volume 16, Issue 11, November 2008, Pages 1277-1288 in the Journal of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, by S. Brien, P. Prescott, N. Bashir, H. Lewith and G. Lewith
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18417375
A thorough systematic review (one of the highest levels of evidence in medical research) which amalgamates and evaluates the existing evidence from randomised controlled trials (the highest level of clinical trial) of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
The search revealed six published studies evaluating MSM, over a 57-year period, with a total of 168 patients. The study concluded that there is positive (although not definitive) evidence that MSM is superior to placebo in the treatment of mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee. It calls for further studies to determine the optimum doseage.
Devil’s Claw: Nature’s remedy for pain
May 28 2009, Daily Express
An interesting article in the Express Lifestyle section looking at Devil’s Claw as a treatment for debilitating backache and joint pain. Dr Dick Middleton said “pain especially rheumatic and joint pain can have a huge impact on peoples lives, but sufferers are often concerned about the long-term adverse effects of taking prescription and over the counter medicines”. Devil’s Claw Root extract (Harpagophytum procumbens) is associated with pain relief in parts of Europe and Africa and “a number of clinical studies of the efficacy and safety of Devil’s Claw as a treatment for lower back and neck pain carried out over the last few years suggest that Devil’s Claw appeared effective in the reduction of the main clinical symptom of pain”.
