The Essiac formula was developed by Renée Caisse, a head nurse at the Sisters of Providence Hospital in Ontario, Canada, as a herbal cancer treatment. (Essiac is Caisse spelled backwards.) Ms. Caisse claimed that in 1922 the formula had been given to her by a patient whose breast cancer had been cured by taking a traditional native American herbal remedy given her by an Ojibwa herbalist.
The Canadian government ruled the claim that Essiac was an effective cancer cure unfounded. However, the herbal formula is an excellent detoxifier and blood cleanser to support any health regime.
The herbs were usually administered as an infusion, hence the term “Essiac Tea”. Please note that since Rene Caisse sold the formula for $1 Essiac™ has been a registered trade mark. We do not sell Essiac™, we sell products based on Rene Caisse’s formula!
Caisse Tea is a blend of four commonly available herbs from which an infusion is made.
This packet will make a total of 13.5 litres before straining -
24 parts chopped Burdock Root (Arctium lappa)
16 parts fine cut Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella)
4 parts powdered inner bark of Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra)
1 part powdered Rhubarb Root (Rheum palmatum)
These are packed in two sachets for mixing prior to use:
Burdock Root / Sheep Sorrel 120g
Slippery Elm / Rhubarb Root 15g
Important Note: The interaction between the herbs during the brewing process is very important, which is why traditionally some of the herbs are powdered and others chopped or fine cut. There is therefore good reason for not supplying all the herbs in powdered form, which might at first sight seem more convenient.
This product is certified organic by the Soil Association. (Organic Certification UK5)
This product is also guaranteed to be free from post harvest treatments such as fumigation and irradiation.
This tea is an adaption of the formula outlined in The Clouds Trust guidelines. The Clouds Trust is a registered charity (No. 0164289) The charity give advice and information to those who are interested in the Caisse Tea. Their helpline number is +44 (0)1730 301162. The manufacturer donates 5% of all profits from this product to of this product to support their work.
Thoroughly mix the contents of the two packages in the packet.
Stage 1
Use an enamel, glass or stainless steel vessel with a close fitting lid.
Bring 1.5 litres of bottled still spring water to a rolling oil.
Stir in 15g of the Caisse mixture, replace the lid and boil for 10 minutes.
Remove from the heat.
Stir thoroughly, scraping down the sides of the pot.
Cover and allow to cool for 10-
Stage 2
Reheat to steaming point but do not re-
Allow the herbs to settle for a few minutes.
Strain through a stainless steel sieve into a jug.
Pour into sterilised bottles.
Expect some sediment in the bottom of the the bottles – this is OK.
Seal the bottles to produce an airtight seal.
Cool quickly by standing the bottles in tepid water.
The bottles are best stored in a fridge, but a cool dark place may do OK.
If the tea develops mould, throw it away, do not use it.
Do not microwave.
The tea should be pale to mid brown, or occasionally greenish.
The texture should be very slightly viscous, not oily.
The taste should be pleasantly mild with a slightly woody flavour.
Rene Caisse's recommended intake was 30ml in 60 ml of hot water once a day.
(Some people divide this into two doses morning and evening, but the above is the recommendation)
Sip like tea, preferably before bedtime.
Food should not be eaten within one hour of drinking the tea.
Take 15ml of the tea in 30ml of hot water as above.
There is no need to exceed the stated measure.
Alcoholic extraction enables a much more complete extraction of the active principles
than is possible with boiling water and produces a much more concentrated product.
The concentration is more predictable, and therefore allows for more accurate dosing.
It will also keep longer -
Caisse tincture also avoids the need to prepare the tea over a 12 -
On the other hand tea proponents argue that the method of preparation is what produces an efficacious end product, and that the alcohol soluble principals are unimportant in this regard, whereas compounds such as complex saccharides formed by brewing the herbs together are very important.
There is no evidence that Rene Caisse ever used tinctures, although she did use an injectable form of the tea.
We believe that both versions have merit
