Benefits of Alfalfa

Traditionally, Alfalfa is promoted as a detoxifier, able to cleanse the liver and bloodstream.

Claims link Alfalfa with enhanced pituitary functions, as well as treating high fevers, inflamed prostate, and alleviating allergic reactions to plants and grasses.

Alfalfa seed is used as a sprouting seed and tender alfalfa sprouts make an excellent and healthy addition to salads.

Alfalfa has been used by the Chinese since the sixth century to treat kidney stones, and to relieve fluid retention and swelling.

Alfalfa, has natural anti-inflammatory properties, and has long been used to treat gout and arthritis, and to soothe active peptic ulcer disease.

Alfalfa is considered to be very helpful for the following: neutralizes acids, allergies, anaemia, arthritis, blood normaliser, blood clotting, haemorrhoids, bursitis, colon problems, kidney cleanser, gout, fatigue (mental and physical), fungal infections, morning sickness, nausea. Pituitary gland problems, tooth decay, and peptic ulcers.

Recent research has shown that alfalfa may be effective in lowering blood sugar in diabetics and that it may stimulate insulin production.

Surprisingly there are few scientific studies supporting these claims for Alfalfa’s health benefits.  However, researchers have found that the Alfalfa root contains saponins, a family of chemicals that have been shown to lower cholesterol levels in monkeys. To date, this research has not been repeated with human subjects.

Other studies have shown that alfalfa can inhibit the growth of some viruses such as herpes simplex, which supports the claims for its antibacterial and antiviral activity. This ability seems to be associated with an amino acid called L-canaverine, which is found in Alfalfa leaves and roots. L-canaverine has also been shown to be effective in controlling leukemia and cancer cells in animal studies, again possibly accounting for some of Alfalfa's health claims.

Beyond dispute is the fact that Alfalfa is an excellent choice as a mineral supplement.

Precautions:

As with any of the concentrated green superfood supplements, it is best to start with a low intake and build up gradually.

Although generally recognized as a safe health supplement, some researchers have raised specific health concerns relating to the excessive consumption of Alfalfa.

Studies have noted a link between excessive consumption of Alfalfa and aggravation of existing  or dormant Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), a disease affecting connective tissues. The suspected cause is the amino acid L-canavanine.

As it is possible to be predisposed to Lupus and not be aware of it, it only moderate amounts of Alfalfa should be uses.  (The suggested intake on the supplement bottle should be safe for most people, but work up to it.)

Anyone diagnosed with Lupus should avoid Alfalfa entirely.
